Nawaz Sharif encouraged me to fight against establishment, claims Zardari

LAHORE – Pakistan People’s Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari expressed his grievances over the tense relations with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, hurling scathing allegations on the latter.

In an interview to a private television channel, the former president said that Nawaz Sharif had urged him to fight against the establishment, adding that PML-N did not support his party when he tried to impeach ex-president Pervez Musharraf.

Moreover, the senior politician said that the treason case against Musharaf was lodged by Nawaz Sharif, however, Pakistan Peoples Party supported him.

“Nawaz had assured me that he would not let Pervez Musharraf off the hook,” claimed Zardari.

“When I announced that Musharraf won’t be allowed to travel abroad, Nawaz sent him out of the country; It turned out that Nawaz had struck a deal with Musharraf,” claimed the former president.

Zardari continued that he used to think Nawaz was very innocent but added that he was far more cunning and opportunistic than he had expected him to be.

The 62-year-old politician claimed that he made the controversial ‘brick for brick’ speech after being ensnared by Nawaz.

Zardari explained that the elder Sharif took advantage of the speech and tried to set the record straight with then army chief, General Raheel Sharif.

Zardari also alleged that it was Nawaz who ordered National Accountability Bureau to take action against his party workers in Sindh adding that he wished to maintain a social relationship with Nawaz.

Previously, in a heated speech in 2015, Zardari had warned the establishment not to overstep its mandate.

“Do not disturb us or we will respond to a brick with a brick,” he said, following which he left the country and returned after 18 months.
