NAB court allows Nawaz to serve term in Kot Lakhpat jail instead of Adiala

ISLAMABAD – An accountability court on Monday accepted a plea filed by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who has been sentenced to seven years in jail in Al-Azizi Steel Mills case, seeking approval to serve his term in a detention center in Lahore.

In the appeal, the supreme leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) said that he wanted to spend his term in Kot Lakhpat Jail in Punjab’s capital city instead of Adiala jail.

The court approved the petition and ordered the authorities concerned to shift him to the jail in Lahore. The former three-time premier will be shifted to the jail in Lahore on Tuesday.

Earlier today, the accountability court sentenced the former prime minister to seven years in prison Monday in the Al-Azizia Steel case, one of the three filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the light of the Panamagate verdict.

Accountability Judge Mohammad Arshad Malik delivered the judgment in both the Al Azizia and Flagship Investment references. Only Sharif and his lawyers were allowed to enter the courtroom.

The 68-year-old was, however, acquitted by the anti-graft court in Flagship reference. The judge said that there was no case against Nawaz Sharif.

The court had reserved judgment in both the references on December 19, 2018.

The supreme leader of former ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was arrested from the court.
