ISLAMABAD – Safety violations by National Highway Authority claimed the life of a laborer, in third such accident on the same project.
According to the details, Danish Masih s/o Daniyal Masih was working with Zahir Khan and brothers on E-35 Hasan Abdal-Havelian motorway project.
The workman was on the bridge for removal of the scaffolding and shuttering, however, he was not provided with any safety gear and neither a harness to be attached.
The ‘unfortunate’ worker lost his balance amid his duty and fell from height of 33 meters primarily due to the fact that there was no platform for these laborers to stand. Danish lost his life in the line of duty.
What exacerbates the situation is that no safety belt was provided to the workers despite deployment at such a height.
The project is funded by Asian Development Bank and on such projects the safety of the people is the top priority.
However, on this very project Danish was the third worker to lose his life owing to safety violations by the authority.
Previously a girder fell and caused a death while in another incident a laborer lost his life as he succumbed to injuries before he could be rushed to the hospital.
NHA being the client is allegedly trying to cover up the issue though an inquiry committee has also been constituted.
The findings of the committee would reveal more about the tragic incident, however, violating the safety standards itself is callous on part of the authority that rakes in billions for construction projects spanned across the length and breadth of Pakistan.
