PM Imran allows Afghan refugees to open bank accounts in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – In an important step to mainstream Afghan refugees, Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced that the Afghan refugees registered in Pakistan can now open bank accounts and be a part of the formal economy in the South Asian country.

The premier took to twitter on Monday to announce that he has issued instructions for opening bank accounts of registered Afghan refugees.

“I have issued instructions today that Afghan refugees who are registered can open bank accounts and from now onwards they can participate in the formal economy of the country.

“This should have been done a long time ago,” he added.

With this step, the Afghan refugees will be able to participate in the formal economy of the country.

As per the directives of Prime Minister Imran Khan, work on a comprehensive policy about Afghan refugees is under process.

Despite financial constraints, Pakistan has been hosting Afghan refugees on its soil with open heart for the last 40 years.

According to United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), Pakistan is hosting the largest number of refugees in the country and as many as 1.45 million hail from Afghanistan.
