Nawaz Sharif shifted back to jail from Jinnah Hospital

LAHORE – Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was shifted back to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore from the Jinnah Hospital on Monday.

The supreme leader of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz spent 11 days in the hospital following a recommendation by a medical board. The relocation coincided with the rejection of a bail plea by the Islamabad High Court on medical grounds.

Sharif had moved Islamabad High Court against the decision of accountability court which had handed seven-year sentence to the former lawmaker in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference.

A bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, however, rejected the bail plea though Sharif was confident about securing the bail.

“This is not a case of unusual circumstance,” the IHC bench ruled.

Nawaz Sharif was also convicted in the Avenfieldapartment reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau in the backdrop of Panama Papers verdict by the Supreme Court.

The former premier was however successful in securing bail in the said reference from the Islamabad High Court.

The elder Sharif was convicted in the Al-Azizia Steel mills reference on December 24th following which he was relocated to the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore – on his request not to be incarcerated at the Adiala Jail.

Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of former premier, shared a video captured when Nawaz Sharif was being shifted back to the jail.
