Six labourers die after lift falls at under construction building in Karachi

KARACHI – In a tragic turn of events, six labourers died on Saturday as a trolley lift fell at an under-construction building in Karachi’s Boat Basin area.

According to police, the labourers were installing glass sheets using the lift at the 11th floor when the tragedy struck.

Rescuers said five labourers died on the spot while an injured one was rushed to the hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries.

Three bodies were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and two to Civil Hospital.

South SSP Pir Muhammad Shah said the police are investigating the incident as they have collected evidence and are taking statements from witnesses as well.

The official confirmed that the cables used for lift were not in good condition. Moreover, the lift was designed to carry three people, however, at the time of the incident,  there were six workers in it.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the incident and sought a report from Karachi Commissioner Iftikhar Ali Shalwani.

The area has been cordoned off and the building has been sealed by the District Commissioner’s department.
