PM Imran stresses regulation for utilizing unmatched tourism potential

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan asserted on Wednesday that Pakistan had an unmatched tourism potential, calling for tough regulations and implementation of appropriate laws.

Addressing the Pakistan Tourism Summit in Islamabad, the premier reminded ministers that Pakistan’s “untouched” scenic sites will be ruined without legislative oversight.

The moot attended by several renowned foreign travel bloggers highlighted the potential of the tourism sector with the prime minister saying, Pakistan is known for its hospitality globally because of the welcome awarded to the tourists by the people.

The prime minister said many tribal areas of the former Fata will attract a lot of tourists when they are opened for tourism but stressed his task force on tourism to respect the local culture.

“I request you that you have to make people respect the local sensibilities and local culture,” he addressed the team.

The premier said if tourists disrespect the local customs of the tribal areas, the reaction would negatively impact tourism.

Imran Khan also cited his personal travel experiences and opined that tapping the tourism sector would create new jobs and would enhance foreign exchange reserves as well.

‘Owing to tourism, poverty has declined in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over last 5 years,’ Imran Khan added.

He said there are dozens of beautiful areas in Pakistan like Nathia Galli, but they need to be developed adding that Pakistani tourists need to be given awareness about the scenic beauty of the country.

The Prime Minister, however, cautioned that tourism must be promoted with responsibility while taking care of the environment.

He said religious tourism, especially for the adherents of Sikhism, Buddhism, and Hinduism will increase the number of tourists in the country.

Senior government officials including Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis, Zulfi Bukhari, Naeem ul Haque, Railways minister Sheikh Rasheed and others attended the event.
