SC fixes hearing of Sharif s bail extension plea for May 3

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan will hear former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s petition seeking an extension in the bail on May 3.

The petition filed by the former lawmaker will be heard by a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa.

The former prime minister filed a fresh petition on Tuesday through his counsel, Khawaja Haris seeking an extension in his bail until a decision on the review petition about March 26 order is issued.

“Given the complicated and life-threatening nature of ischemic heart disease, carotid artery disease, lymphadenopathy and renal artery stenosis, from which the petitioner [Nawaz Sharif] is admittedly suffering […] it is in the interest of justice that condition imposed for the petitioner’s release on bail merits review,” stated the review petition filed by Sharif.

Unforgivable damage will occur if the bail is not extended,” the application stated.

The Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz supreme leader had been granted bail on medical grounds by the top court on March 26 for six weeks in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference.

On April 25, Nawaz Sharif submitted a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking permanent bail and an offshore trip for medical treatment; Nawaz Sharif’s bail is set to expire on May 7.

The three-time prime minister was convicted in both Avenfield Reference and Al-Azizia Reference by the Supreme Court; the references were filed by the National Accountability Bureau in line with the verdict of apex court in the Panama Papers Case.

Sharif was granted bail besides suspension of the sentence by the Islamabad High Court in the Avenfield Reference, however, he was sentenced to seven years behind bars in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference and was fined Rs1.5 billion and $25 million by an accountability court on December 24, 2018.
