ISLAMABAD – Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Shehbaz Sharif called for fresh elections in the country as he announced the decision of opposition lawmakers to quit the parliamentary committee formed to probe the rigging allegations in July 25 polls.
Speaking on the floor of the House on Saturday, the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz President said the rigging committee has not met for four months, becoming a reason for them [opposition lawmakers] to resign from it.
The lawmaker visibly backtracked from his position on the ‘charter of economy’ days after Maryam Nawaz expressed her disdain about the idea.
“I am bound to obey Nawaz Sharif,” he told the lawmakers.
In an interaction with newsmen, the politician fired a broadside at the incumbent regime for its attitude during the discussion on budget and said the House had become a fish market during the session.
The younger Sharif said none of the Opposition’s demands for the budget was accepted.
On the other hand, Special Assistant to PM on Political Affairs Naeem ul Haq rejected Shehbaz’s announcement and shared that his call for mid-term elections “shows his naivety hence cannot be taken seriously”.
“The passage of the federal finance bill despite the opposition’s shenanigans is an achievement of PM Imran Khan and his cabinet,” he said in a statement released by the party’s central media department.
“Losers of general elections 2018 cannot afford another defeat,” Haque added.
