Fazlur Rehman cannot further mediate between MQM-govt

ISLAMABAD (Staff Report) – JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman has excused to further play the role of mediator between the government and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

The Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) chief had been tasked by the Prime Minister of Pakistan to play mediator regarding the MQM parliamentarians’ resignations.

Sources told Daily Pakistan that Fazlur Rehman met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the PM House on Wednesday where they exchanged views on the overall political situation of the country and MQM resignations.

Rehman briefed the PM on the progress on the matter of MQM resignations and JUI-F Shoora decision.

According to the sources, Fazlur Rehman refused to play the role of mediator on the issue and told the PM about the decision of his party’s Shoora that he should not play the role of mediator because no flexibility is being shown by either sides.

The JUI-F cheif said: “Playing the role of mediator in this situation is harmful for party. Therefore, I can not play the role of mediator by violating party policy.

“What was within my reach to resolve the matter I have done and I can do no more.”

The sources added that PM Nawaz Sharif tried to take Maulana Fazlur Rehman into confidence saying his decision would be acceptable to all the sides. The PM urged the JUI-F chief to continue playing his role and bring MQM on the negotiation table.
