ISLAMABAD – The Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provinces are anticipated to experience increased rainfall as the monsoon season continues, following previous spells that caused widespread disruption across the country.
Recent heavy thunderstorms have significantly impacted 10 districts in Sindh, exacerbating urban flooding and causing widespread power outages.
In Karachi, moderate rains have led to the deterioration of approximately 15 roads, including those recently constructed or repaired.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), “Shallow monsoon currents are penetrating into eastern/southeastern Sindh.” Areas affected by this weather system include Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Sanghar, and Karachi.
The PMD predicts “partly cloudy & humid [weather] with chances of isolated rain/thunderstorm at outskirts” for Karachi tonight (Wednesday), with temperatures ranging between 32-34°C.
In KP, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of rain, thunderstorms, and high winds in Swat, Chitral, Dir (upper & lower), Malakand, Buner, Shangla, Bajaur, Haripur, Kohistan, Torghar, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, and South Waziristan over the next 24 hours.
On Tuesday, heavy rainfall caused four fatalities in KP: three people died when a bus was struck by a landslide in Upper Kohistan, and a minor was killed by lightning in Malakand District.
Rain-related incidents from July 1 to September 2 resulted in 96 deaths and 133 injuries across KP.
