Israeli newspaper touts Imran Khan as key figure for improving Pakistan-Israel relations

Imran Khan

An influential Israeli newspaper has identified Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Prime Minister of Pakistan, as the most suitable figure to potentially reshape the relationship between Pakistan and Israel.

According to a recent column published in the Israeli newspaper Times of Israel, Pakistan has long been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, more so than many other Islamic countries. This support is deeply ingrained in Pakistani society and constitution. Pakistan has consistently backed Palestinians on every international platform, including the United Nations, offering political, moral, and diplomatic support.

The Times of Israel article highlights that during his tenure as Prime Minister, Imran Khan repeatedly voiced strong support for Palestine and vehemently condemned Israeli attacks. Khan opposed the notion of normalizing relations between Pakistan and Israel, asserting that such a move was impossible as long as the Palestinian issue remained unresolved.

The newspaper’s piece also notes Khan’s connection to Israel through his former spouse, Jemima Goldsmith, who is part of the prominent Goldsmith family. The Times of Israel suggests that Khan’s association with Goldsmith could play a role in transforming the current nature of Pakistan-Israel relations.

The article acknowledges that during PTI’s time in power, Khan adopted a practical approach to foreign relations. It implies that Khan might be more open to reconsidering Pakistan’s stance on Israel. The newspaper advocates that Israel and its allies should ensure Khan’s continued freedom to participate in Pakistani politics, which could influence future diplomatic dynamics between the two nations.

This assessment from an Israeli publication reflects ongoing international interest in the potential for evolving diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Israel, with Imran Khan positioned as a key figure in this dialogue.
