How many Pakistani scholars sent abroad for PhD skip return?

ISLAMABAD – Nearly 100 Pakistan scholars, who were sent abroad for PhD on government expense, did not return to homeland to the serve their country.

The Ministry of Education revealed it in a reported submitted in the Senate in response to question in this regard.

The ministry said 3,000 scholars were sent abroad for PhD in five years, out of which 1,126 have returned while 1,810 are still studying. It revealed that 65 scholars skipped the return despite completion of their studies, a move which is in violation of the HEC contract.

It further revealed that 185 scholars went abroad under Faculty Development Program in last five years, adding that 144 continue to study while remaining 34 did not come back to Pakistan.

The 34 scholars include 14 from Punjab, 13 from Centre, four from Sindh, two from KP and one from Balochistan.

Most of these scholars, who did not return, have also not deposit the scholarship amount in national treasury as per the agreement.

It is the reason the HEC is avoiding to not send any students abroad.

The ministry stated that before going abroad, each scholar must sign an agreement with the HEC, in which they commit to returning to Pakistan and working here for at least 5 years.
