ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday moved Supreme Court seeking contempt proceedings against government officials over what it claims is a violation of the court’s directions regarding former prime minister Imran Khan’s medical examination and treatment.
The controversy intensified after PIMS issued late-night clarification detailing how Imran Khan’s medical examination was conducted. According to the hospital administration, two specialists from Shifa International Hospital participated in eye assessment, while the remaining examinations were conducted by relevant PIMS specialists.
PIMS said the clinical input from the Shifa specialists was considered alongside the findings of investigations carried out at the hospital. The hospital administration subsequently stated that a medical board comprising PIMS doctors consolidated the medical fitness report.

PIMS maintained that it would not disclose the confidential contents of the medical report, citing patient privacy and directions of the Supreme Court. The clarification, however, has become a key point of contention for PTI, which maintains that the Supreme Court had ordered a medical board comprising doctors from Shifa International Hospital, rather than merely involving Shifa specialists in a particular examination.
The dispute has now shifted from a medical examination into a legal battle over whether the government and hospital authorities complied with the Supreme Court’s directions.
With PTI formally seeking contempt proceedings, the Supreme Court will now be asked to determine whether its earlier order was followed and whether any officials should face proceedings for alleged non-compliance.
The development comes after Imran Khan was brought to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad, during the intervening night of August 20 and 21, 2026, for medical examination and treatment.
PTI alleged that the government failed to comply with the Supreme Court’s order concerning the constitution of the medical board, particularly its direction regarding the involvement of doctors from Shifa International Hospital.
The contempt petition was filed by PTI lawyers Uzair Karamat Bhandari and Salman Akram Raja and has reportedly been allotted a diary number by the Supreme Court. According to the petition, PTI is seeking the immediate transfer of Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad, along with steps to ensure that the court’s directions are implemented in letter and spirit.
The party has also requested the appointment of a court official or local commission to monitor and ensure compliance with the Supreme Court’s order. It further seeks the issuance of show-cause notices to those allegedly responsible for contempt, with a request that they be directed to appear personally before the court.
