LAHORE – In a satirical statement, a ruling party leader has suggested the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) can boost its vote bank if it avoids “family planning”.
Akhtar Rasool of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), along with National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, visited Thursday the Speaker’s constituency – NA-122 – where Rasool ratcheted the bizarre rhetoric about gaining the vote bank by ditching birth control.
“The votes of PML-N will be decreased if it adopts family planning,” the PML-N said in a satirical manner.
The illogical provocation was somehow taken as a joke by the NA Speaker and other present on the occasion.
Ayaz Sadiq, responding to the statement, said Rasool shared a “deep thought”. He, however, denied the possibility of reduction in PML-N vote bank.
Pakistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, is the sixth-most populous country with a population exceeding 200 million people.
In the last general elections three years ago, the Pakistan Muslim League (N) won the largest number of votes (14,794,188) and seats (125) but still fell six seats short; this resulted in a hung parliament where no party was able to command a majority in the National Assembly.
PTI, on the other hand, emerged as the third biggest party with 7,563,504 votes and 27 seats in the Parliament.
