3 killed, 7 missing as boat carrying devotees capsizes near Larkana

LARKANA – At least 3 people were killed while 7 others went missing when a boat carrying devotees capsized on Friday night in the River Indus.

The tragic incident happened some eight to ten kilometres away from Dokri area in Sindh’s Larkana district. As many as 30 devotees were onboard the vessel when it capsized apparently due to being overloaded.

20 people were rescued by Saturday morning whereas seven devotees were still missing, a search operation for whom was underway.

The people had boarded the vessel from the mausoleum of Muhabat Pir Patan, situated on the bank of the River Indus. Reportedly, the devotees had come from Khairpur and the incident occurred when they were returning.

Larkana’s Deputy Commissioner Kashif Ali Tipu who rushed to the scene after the incident told the newsmen that one of the deceased was identified as Dawood Channa.

Sukkur division’s Commissioner Abbas Baloch who was present at the site told Express Tribune that there were conflicting statements about the number of people onboard.

“Some say there were 30 to 35 persons and seven motorbikes but others claim the number of the people was around 25,” he said.
