KARACHI – The Supreme Court on Saturday barred four companies, manufacturing milk products, from selling and marketing substandard items.
A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, took up a suo moto case regarding the sale of hazardous milk by the companies at Karachi Registry. The apex court ordered to halt their operations with immediate effect.
Also, Sindh’s authorities have subsequently been told to remove milk belonging to Day fresh, Nurpur, Day Fresh UHT and Sky Milk from sale racks.
The chief justice issued the orders after laboratory results failed to convince the court about the quality of the milk supplied by these companies in the city. During the hearing, the chief justice remarked that these companies were selling tea whitener, not the milk.
At the last hearing earlier this month, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar ordered the authorities to conduct laboratory test of all brands of packed milk available in the markets of Karachi. He also expressed anger over authorities concerned for not submitting a detailed report regarding administrating injections to cows.
The apex court is also hearing an identical case at the Lahore Registry where the chief justice, at the last hearing, remarked that pharmaline chemical that causes cancer has been found in various brands of packaged milk.
He had further remarked that all people, including children and adults, were forced to consume unhealthy milk, adding that citizens were anxious over the use of chemicals in milk.
The court also imposed a ban on giving injections to cows for increasing milk production. The Chief Justice remarked that cancer was spreading due to use of such injections.
