Pakistan to release ailing Indian prisoner on humanitarian grounds today

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is going to release an India prisoner on humanitarian grounds today (Thursday) due to his deteriorating health, Foreign Office said.

The prisoner named Jitendra was arrested in 2014 when he crossed into Pakistan. He was given instant consular access and his sentence ended the same year he was captured, FO spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal said.

He added that Jitendra had to spent over three years in Pakistani prison due to failure of the Indian government as it confirmed his citizenship in April 2018.

The decision to send back the Indian prisoner was a tough one as several Pakistanis have not been repatriated despite the fact that they have completed their jail terms.

However, the FO spokesperson said Jitendra was being repatriated due to his unstable health due to a blood disease. He emphasized that humanitarian issues should not be politicized.
