LHC moved for damages caused to public property by TLP protesters

LAHORE – A petition seeking compensation for the destruction of public property by agitators of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) during the recent protests was filed in the Lahore High Court on Saturday.

The country-wide protests sparked after the Supreme Court earlier this week overturned the death sentence of Asia Bibi, who was accused of blasphemy.

The petition was submitted by citizen Abdullah Malik, stating that the protesters destroyed government and public property, causing considerable losses.

Protecting the lives and wealth of the citizens is the top responsibility of the government, the petition states, adding that the government violated the basic rights by not doing so.

He pleaded the court to order the Punjab government to pay damages to the citizens.

On Friday, negotiations between the government and Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) reached an agreement to end the sit-ins across the country. The agreement to this effect has been signed by Minister of Religious Affairs Dr Noor ul Haq Qadri and Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat from the government side.

Patron in Chief of Tehreek e Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) Pir Muhammad Afzal Qadri and Central Nazim Muhammad Waheed Noor also signed the document on behalf of their parties.

A five-point document of the agreement between the two sides has surfaced.

The media reports said that the ongoing protests are expected to be ended in the hours to come.

As per the five-point agreement:

1: A review petition, which is the right the complainant, will be filed against her acquittal and the government will not oppose it.

2: A prompt action will be taken to place Asia Bibi’s name on the Exit Control List (ECL).

3: Legal action will be taken for the protesters if killed following the acquittal of Asia Bibi.

4: The protesters who were arrested on October 30 and later on will be released soon.

5: Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) will apologize to those whose sentiments have been unnecessarily hurt during the protests.
