19-year-old girl burnt alive for refusing marriage proposal in Mandi Bahauddin

GUJRAT - In a pathetic incident, a man has set a teenage girl on fire for rejecting his marriage proposal in Mandi Bahauddin.

Following the attack on Friday, the 19-year-old victim was taken to the burn unit of the Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital, Gujrat, where she is in stable condition.

The police had arrested the accused named Tasawwar Hussain following a complaint lodged by girl’s father, Riaz Ahmed, with Bhagat police station in Phalian tehsil.

Ahmed claimed that his daughter was used to go to a woman's home in a nearby village to learn sewing, adding that Hussain, brother of the woman, extended the proposal. In response, the girl turned it down.

After the girl did not come back home until nightfall, some members of her family and father reached Hussain’s sister house, the complaint added.

They saw the angry boy pouring petrol on the girl and then set her on fire before the family members could stop him.

Riaz put a shawl on his daughter to extinguish the fire.

A case has been registered under Sections 336B, 324 and 337L of the Pakistan Penal Code, while further investigation is underway.
