ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Friday formed a three-member joint investigation team (JTI) to probe the misconduct of Minister for Science and Technology Senator Azam Swati.
The apex court issued orders for the formation of the investigation body while hearing a suo motu notice pertaining to the ‘unlawful’ transfer of Islamabad police chief Jan Muhammad.
It emerged on October 27 that the government had allegedly transferred the IG Muhammad after he did not attend the call of Swait, an allegation denied by the minister.
The government also rubbished the reports, clarifying that the IGP was transferred as the government was not satisfied with his performance.
However, the court suspended his transfer after the attorney general in a previous hearing informed the court that the IG was transferred on Prime Minister Imran Khan’s verbal orders.
During today’s hearing, the members of the probe team include National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) Director Irfan Mangi, Intelligence Bureau (IB) official Ahmed Rizwan and Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Mirvais Niaz.
Further, the bench remarked, “The JIT will probe the cases against the federal minister in the US and find out whether he can travel to the country or not.”
The chief justice added, “These are decisive moments and will determine whether the rich and powerful can exploit the poor segment of the society. If an inquiry is conducted on merit, it will boost people’s faith and confidence in Pakistan’s institutions.”
“Poor people are pressured and the affected family has forgiven Swati but we do not accept this truce,” he added.

In today’s hering, the minister, the affected family, the attorney general and Islamabad IGP appeared before the bench.
The head of the victim family informed the court they had reached a truce with the PTI leader, to which, the top judge remarked that the court did not recognise this deal.
He remarked that Swati carried out anti-state action, adding that injustice with poor will not be tolerated.
The judge further said that the minister should accept its mistake otherwise stern legal action will be taken against him.
“We will also examine Article 62(1)(f) in this matter,” the CJP said.
The counsel for Swati argued that his client felt sorry over his action, to which, the CJP remarked: “He should resign from his post if he feels regret”.
The court also ordered the formation of a joint investigation team (JIT) comprising members of Intelligence Bureau (IB), National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to probe the alleged unlawful transfer of the IGP. The court sought a report on the matter from the JIT within 14 days.
During the hearing, Jan Muhammad excused himself from continuing to perform duties as Islamabad police chief. He pleaded the court to grant permission on my transfer.
On his request, the court withdrew its verdict regarding the suspension of a notification regarding the transfer the IGP Islamabad.
