Sindh govt announces public holiday on Nov 4

KARACHI – Sindh government has announced a public holiday on Saturday (November 3) throughout the province to mark the 274th Urs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai.

A notification issued by the authorities says, “The government of Sindh has been pleased to declare 14th Safar, 1439 (A.H) on 4th November, 2017, Saturday as a Public Holiday throughout the province on occasion of Urs of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai for all office, autonomous, semi-autonomous bodies, corporate and local councils under the administrative control of government of Sindh, except essential services”.

The three-day ceremony of the Urs has kicked off, where poetry marathons, literature conference and other activities will be conducted on the occsaion.

Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai was a noted Sufi scholar, saint, and poet, widely considered to be the greatest Muslim poet of the Sindhi language.

His collected poems were assembled in the compilation Shah Jo Risalo, which exists in numerous versions and has been translated into English, Urdu and other languages.
