ISLAMABAD – United States Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Alice Wells opined on Tuesday that Pakistan could play a meaningful role, in collaboration with Washington in achieving a peaceful resolution in Afghanistan.
Wells, who winded up her seven-day tour emphasised the role Pakistan can play in Afghanistan in meeting with senior civil-military officials including Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
“In the aftermath of the Tashkent conference on Afghanistan, Ambassador Wells noted the growing international consensus on the way forward to achieving peace in Afghanistan,” the US Embassy said in a statement.
Ms Wells visited Pakistan from March 28 to April 3. During her stay, she met Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal; Safron Minister retired Lt Gen Abdul Qadir Baloch; Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs Miftah Ismail; Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua; National Security Adviser retired Lt Gen Nasser Janjua; and UN High Commissioner for Refugees Country Representative Ruven Menikdiwela.
Ambassador Wells travelled to Karachi over the weekend where she met with Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and business leaders.
In Karachi, Ambassador Wells highlighted ongoing efforts to build strong economic and people-to-people ties with the people of Karachi and Sindh.
