ISLAMABAD – Former prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif arrived in Islamabad from his Shangla Gali residence on Saturday amid warmth extended by his party workers.
Scores of party workers assembled along the Murree-Islamabad route, especially at Athal Chowk Bharakahu in Islamabad, to catch a glimpse of the ousted prime minister.
Nawaz Sharif’s car was driven by his elder son Hussain Nawaz and the former premier came out of his car to wave to his jubilant supporters at Bharakahu.
Stringent security arrangements were made before the arrival of the former premier.
The premier, accompanied by his family would be staying in Punjab House Islamabad where he would meet party members and journalists, said sources.
After spending a busy day in the capital, Nawaz Sharif would move towards Lahore on Sunday via road, however, details regarding his much sought after journey are yet to be revealed.
Sources privy to the developments said the ruling party plans to turn the journey into a public mobilisation campaign with pit-stops on multiple spots where Sharif can interact and address party workers to show his muscle.
Nawaz Sharif proceeded to his Murree residence and presided over meetings there ever since a five-member bench of the apex court disqualified him, last Friday.
The Supreme Court, in its judgment in the Panama Papers case, disqualified Sharif under Article 62 (1) (f) of the Constitution over his failure to disclose un-withdrawn receivables constituting assets from a UAE-based company, Capital FZE.
The verdict stated that he was not ‘honest’ and ‘truthful’, as per the country’s Constitution following which the ruling party appointed Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as the new chief executive.
