LAHORE – Punjab Food Authority (PFA) sealed KFC and Hardee’s outlets on the Motorway after officials found rotten vegetables, expired sauces, and multiple violations of food safety and hygiene standards during a surprise inspection.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of PFA officials while Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Punjab, Salma Butt, accompanied the inspection team and personally reviewed the conditions inside the international food chain.
During inspection, officials found spoiled vegetables, expired ketchup and sauces, and unhygienic food preparation practices. The inspection team also identified damaged flooring, accumulated food residue in difficult-to-clean areas, inadequate sanitation, and insufficient water filtration arrangements, raising concerns over public health and food safety.

Salma Butt questioned continued use of expired condiments and directed officials to stop their consumption immediately. She said the authority had received several complaints through social media platforms and official complaint cells from travelers alleging poor food quality and unhygienic conditions at the motorway eateries.
Butt noted that thousands of commuters are forced to rely on these restaurants during long-distance travel because there are few alternative dining options on the motorway. Stressing that travelers deserve safe and hygienic food, she said the deteriorating condition of the facilities could not be ignored.
She instructed officials to ensure all pending issues, including replacement of spoiled vegetables, repairs to damaged flooring, thorough cleaning of food preparation areas, elimination of germ-prone contamination points, and installation of proper water filtration systems, are addressed before the outlets are allowed to reopen.
After inspection, the Punjab Food Authority ordered the immediate sealing of both establishments until all food safety and hygiene deficiencies are rectified.
Reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy toward food safety violations, the PFA warned that strict enforcement actions will continue against restaurants and food businesses that fail to comply with hygiene regulations, adding that public health will not be compromised under any circumstances.
