LAHORE – An accountability court Thursday ordered to send Mian Shehbaz Sharif, the Leader of Opposition in National Assembly, to prison after remanding him to 14 days judicial custody in the Ashiana Iqbal Housing scandal case.
Accountability Judge Najam-ul-Hassan presided the hearing against the former Punjab chief minister, who is accused of involvement in a multi-billion rupees housing scam.
Earlier, Shehbaz was brought to the accountability court in the Punjab capital amid tight security. A large of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supporters clashed with the anti-riot police outside the court.
During the last hearing on Nov 28, the accountability court had approved a nine-day extension in Sharif’s physical remand.
The PML-N president has been in NAB’s custody since October 5 in connection to the Ashiana Iqbal Housing Scheme case in which Rs 14 billion were allegedly embezzled.
The anti-corruption watchdog also claimed that the former CM had given gifts worth Rs600 million to his family members in 2012.
Meanwhile, another inquiry pertaining to possessing the assets beyond means is also being carried out against Shehbaz Sharif.
However, the leader of the opposition in NA termed all the allegation “fabricated”.
A large number of PML-N supporters have reached the court to welcome their leader.
