Teenage girl files rare petition in SC to change surname to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – A teenage girl, who apparently has differences with her father, has filed a rare petition with the Supreme Court, seeking removal of her father’s name from her educational and legal documents.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justices Umar Ata Bandial and Ijazul Ahsan, heard the unusual petition in which the 18-year-old girl named Tatheer Fatima asked the court to change her surname to Pakistan.

Fatima alleged that her father did not provide her with the documents she requires, adding that she has to face several difficulties due to not having the necessary documents.

The petition was filed by girl’s mother Fehmida Butt urging the court to remove his name from the CNIC card of her daughter.

She requested the chief justice to pass an order for removal the name, to this, the CJP directed the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) director general to present her father in the court, saying the petitioner has a grievance with her father.

The apex court also inquired the DG NADRA should he be able to find her father, to which, the official replied in affirmative.

However, Justice Nisar remarked that the top could not pass an order for the removal of the name.

In response, the petitioner’s mother said: Parents have a right to disown their children, so why can children not end association with their parents?

The apex court, later, served a notice on petitioner’s father and adjourned the hearing for a week.
