UK elections 2017: Theresa May s Conservative Party may fail to win majority, exit poll shows

LONDON – Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative Party has suffered a heavy blow after the official exit poll indicated Britain is heading for a hung parliament, according to exit polls on Thursday.

The survey taken at polling stations across the UK suggests the party could get 314 MPs when all the results have been counted in Thursday’s poll, BBC reported.

Labour would get 266, the Lib Dems 14, UKIP none and the SNP 34, the NOP/Ipsos MORI poll for BBC/ITV/Sky suggests.

The first official results are due before midnight local time (23:00 GMT).

The final result is expected by Friday lunchtime. A total of 650 Westminster MPs will be elected, with about 45.8 million people entitled to vote.

The unexpected result would see Labour increase its number of seats by 34 to 266, while the Liberal Democrats would take 14. Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP appear to have suffered heavy losses.

Political deadlock in London could derail negotiations with the other 27 EU countries ahead of Britain’s exit from the bloc, due in March 2019, before they even begin in earnest.
