ISLAMABAD – The Press Council of Pakistan (PCP), a federal government agency, has demanded an apology from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur over his irresponsible and inappropriate remarks against journalist, particularly women journalists.
Taking a suo moto action in response to “the unacceptable conduct displayed by the Chief Minister,” the Council has sent a notice to Gandapur, asking him to issue a formal apology within 15 days.
The notice states that the chief minister made the controversial remarks concerning the journalist community, with particular reference to women journalists, during PTI’s public gathering in Islamabad on September 8.
“As the chief executive of the province, it is expected that you will maintain a level of decorum and respect in your communication. The use of abusive language not only undermines the dignity of your office but also sets a poor example for the citizens of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” read the notice.
Journalists’ bodies, including the National Press Club (NPC), Karachi Press Club (KPC) and Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) have already slammed the use of vulgar language by the chief minister.
Following his fiery speech at Islamabad rally, Ali Amin Gandapur’s remarks about media, women and the Punjab chief minister attracted condemnation from almost all sides, even prompting PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan to tender an unconditional apology for the language used by his party leader at a public meeting held the previous day.
