KARACHI – The provincial assembly of Sindh has proposed that a university set to be established in Hyderabad be named after Hakim Ali Zardari instead of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain.
According to a letter, believed to be issued by the Sindh assembly secretariat, the university has been proposed to be named in honour of the father of former president and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.
The letter categorised as ‘Most essential, important and urgent’ also expressed gratitude to Mr Malik Riaz, chairman Bahria Town for proposing the construction of the university in Hyderabad district.
It outlined that drinking water was available on the riverside and the climate was also conducive to the construction of the institute.
“All modern required facilities can be made available, therefore such Mega Project of University approved by Assembly in the last session of Sindh Assembly” the letter read.
Malik Riaz had announced in November 2014 his plan to set up two universities – one each in Karachi and Hyderabad – to be named after Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain.
Afterwards, in 2015, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan and Bahria Town chief Malik Riaz performed the groundbreaking of Altaf Hussain University (AHU).

On the occasion, MQM chief Altaf Hussain, in his telephonic address congratulated the people of Hyderabad and thanked Malik Riaz and PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari for their support.
In March, last year, the Sindh Assembly passed a law to rename Altaf Hussain University.
“There is no need to establish a university after Altaf Hussain who works in the hands of anti-Pakistan elements to destabilise the country,” CM Sindh Murad Ali Shah had said in his address to the cabinet that approved the law.
With the latest decision by the provincial assembly, it seems that the Altaf Hussain university would be renamed which is a harbinger of the crumbling base of the embattled political party that came under the radar of law enforcers after the anti-Pakistan diatribe of Altaf Hussain.
