Gaza killings: Palestine Solidarity Day being observed in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – The Palestine Solidarity Day is being observed across Pakistan today (Friday) to express solidarity with the oppressed Palestinians martyred in the recent violence at Gaza Strip-Israel border.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had instructed to observe the special day; in a statement, the Prime Minister affirmed Pakistan will continue to support Palestinian brethren on every forum.

Special rallies, gatherings and seminars will be organised to highlight the issue of Gaza killings and to condemn Israel’s terrorism in the violence-battered region.

The day is being marked as Israeli troops shot dead at least 61 Palestinian protesters on the Gaza border on Monday when US embassy was being opened in Jerusalem, a move that stirred concerns in Middle East and the Muslim world.

The death toll was the highest in a single day for Palestinians since 2014, and according to the health ministry over 2,700 people were left injured either by live gunfire, tear gas or other means.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi said that Israeli state terrorism should be investigated, calling for an independent inquiry into the massacre.

“I raised the issue of the massacre of Palestinians due to Israeli state terrorism in Gaza,” Lodhi said while speaking to the media after her address at the UN General Assembly.

“Israel is already an occupying power and peace has not been restored in the Middle East because of it,” Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN added.

Pakistan condemns US veto for Gaza carnage probe

Pakistan has expressed full support for any move of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to highlight the plight of the Palestinians, besides deploring the UN Security Council failure to slam brutalities of Israeli forces along Gaza border.

Referring to the US move, Pakistan’s permanent representative at the UN Maleeha Lodhi condemned that a country has again vetoed the unanimous call of the other 14 UNSC members to investigate the killing at least 61 Palestinians along the by Israeli forces.

The UNSC draft said, “The Security Council expresses its outrage and sorrow at the killing of Palestinian civilians exercising their right to peaceful protest,” adding, “The Security Council calls for an independent and transparent investigation into these actions to ensure accountability.”

The U.S. has used its veto power 43 times against UN resolutions concerning Israel.

Speaking at an emergency meeting of OIC ambassadors at the UN, Lodi described a call by some countries for both sides to exercise “restraint” a “disingenuous attempt” to equate the occupying power with the Palestinians.

He also took aim at the US for shifting its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, terming it a violation of international law contravention of the UN Charter’s prohibition of the forcible acquisition of territory.
