Nine killed, 35 injured in Thatta road mishap

THATTA (Staff Report/Online) – At least nine people were killed and 35 others injured including women and children in a road accident in Thatta near Jhirk on Sunday morning.

Five children and three women died when a collision took place between a truck and passenger van. The identities of those killed have not been confirmed as yet.

According to the reports, the van was heading to Shahadat Kot from Karachi when the unfortunate incident occurred near Jhirk.

The casualties were transported to Thatta Civil Hospital at Makli for treatment, from where 10 people with serious injuries were shifted to hospitals in Hyderabad and Karachi.

“The fast moving bus was trying to overtake a truck carrying a load of stones when it collided with the vehicle”, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Thatta Fida Hussain Mastoi said.

Those among the casualties are from Larkana, Dadu and Qambar-Shahdadkot districts, the SSP said, SSP added.

No case has been registered within the limits of Jhirk police station as yet.

Pakistan has an appalling record for fatal traffic accidents due to poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.

Rescue equipment available to Pakistani emergency services is often basic. When crashes occur far from major towns, rescue efforts can take time and injured passengers have less hope of survival.
