Punjab Police Constable Shoots Himself For Not Getting Leave

BUREWALA – A Punjab police personnel attempted to take his life after authorities refused to grant him leave in Burewala city of the province, it emerged on Monday.

Rescue official said constable Laeeq Ahmed was shifted to a local hospital with bullet wound on his chest following the incident. He has now been referred to another hospital in Sahiwal in critical condition.

Family of the injured cop claimed that Ahmed was under stress due to work load and he had sought leave for rest. However, he took the extreme step after he was denied permission.

On the other hand, district police spokesperson claimed that Laeeq Ahmed was accidently injured while cleaning his gun. DPO Vehari has directed the authorities to ensure provision of best treatment facilities to the injured constable.

Punjab policemen are often found complaining against excessive workload, extending duty hours and others. The department must take measures to ensure the mental health of the cops so they can perform their duties diligently to curb crimes.
