LAHORE – The Punjab government has appointed vice chancellors of 7 out of 13 public sector universities amid deepening row with Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan.

Reports said the governor had rejected and returned the recommendations made by the provincial government for the appointments of VC. However, seven VCs have been appointed with the approval of the Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

Report said that the appointment of 7 university Vice Chancellors was made without the Governor’s approval. The governor had raised some objections while rejecting the recommendations, stating that the process of forming the Vice Chancellor panel was not proper and needed to be reassessed.

He pointed out that while the chief minister could send a panel, selection could not be made without his consent.

The difference has ignited power games with persons linked to governor claimed that the power to appoint the VCs lies with the Governor House. They also called for the transparency in the selection process.

However, the other side claimed that governor has no authority to return the summary sent by the chief minister. They said the seven VCs were appointed according to law with the CM’s approval.

Additionally, Professor Dr. Muhammad Ali has been appointed Vice Chancellor of Punjab University, Professor Shahid Munir as VC of the University of Engineering, Lahore, and Professor Aaqif Anwar as VC of the University of Education, Lahore.

According to the notification, Professor Ahmad Shuja has been appointed as the VC of the University of Gujrat, Professor Inayatullah as VC of the Engineering University Taxila, Professor Aamer Azam as VC of Khawaja Fareed University, Rahim Yar Khan, and Professor Zubair Iqbal as VC of Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan.
