Eyewitnesses told police that the driver appeared to have lost control of the car on Chandragupta Marg near the Italian Embassy while trying to save the dog. The car hit a tree before coming to a halt.

The bonnet and the front grille of the vehicle were heavily damaged. The portion above the bonnet came off and the engine too was damaged. Police reached the accident spot and a special crane was roped in to haul away the scrunched up vehicle.
