Italian designer Gianvito Rossi s Argo flats resemble local wear

LAHORE – Italian designer Gianvito Rossi has recently designed everyday summer flats named as Argo sandals. Crafted in Italy from smooth chocolate brown leather, the relaxed silhouette features tonal upper straps strung together by a gold-toned metal chain for a tough-luxe finish. This footwear can be worn in summers and are a good choice for maintaining a style statement.

While having a look at the footwear by Gianvito Rossi, We feel a sheer resemblance to the traditional shoewear known as the Kolapuri. Kolhapuri chappals are Indian hand-crafted leather slippers that are locally tanned using vegetable dyes.

Kolhapuri Chappals or Kolhapuri s as they are commonly referred to are a style of open-toed, T-strap sandal which originated from Kolhapur, a southern district in the state of Maharashtra. These are used during festivals as well as day to day purpose. Indian parents may or may not use it to discipline their wards.

Let’s have a look at some of the comments to Gianvito Rossi’s post:

However, this isn’t the first time, traditional shoes have been picked up by an international shoemaker, with a new name. Earlier the French shoemaker Christian Louboutin came under fire for ‘revamping’ our beloved Peshawari Chappals and selling them by the name of Imran Sandals.

The designer was called out for cultural appropriation. A post on Louboutin’s Instagram in March announced the release of the shoe that sparked a social media frenzy in Pakistan.

Also in 2014, British designer Paul Smith released a sandal that looked strikingly similar to the Peshawari chappal with no initial mention of the Pakistani shoe, sparking fiery protests online and in the press in the country.
