LAHORE – Pakistan’s former federal minister and seasoned political figure Jahangir Tareen is reportedly planning to join Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) as his party Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party failed to gain traction.
The development comes after Tareen met PPP Punjab President Makhdoom Mahmood as businessman considered joining one of the three major Pakistani political parties.
As Tareen has not shared official statement, unverified reports suggest potential meeting between Tareen and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari in near future.
Tareen, once a close aide of Imran Khan, remains absent from political scene since his defeat in 2024 general elections from Multan and Lodhran. The meeting with Makhdoom Ahmad was purely business-related, and the politician has not made any commitment to rejoin politics.
For the unversed, Jahangir Tareen started political journey during Pervez Musharraf’s regime, where he initially aligned with the PML-Q. He later joined PTI in 2012 and got top ranks within party.
He was disqualified by the courts ahead of the 2018 polls, but played a crucial behind-the-scenes role in securing PTI’s majority by recruiting independent candidates.
