NEW DELHI (Web Desk) – Exit polls on Monday hinted that the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has a strong chance of winning the elections in Assam and forming government in the state.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Moi, who is completing his third year in office next week, had earlier promised his party would overcome their recent electoral failures in the states of Bihar and Delhi.
According to exit polls results, which were released at the end of polling, the Indian National Congress could find itself being voted out of government in the key states of Kerala and Assam, which it won in the previous state elections.
In Kerala, a poll on India TV showed the Left Democratic Front (LDF) getting 74 to 82 against United Democratic Front( UDF)’s 54 to 62 seats. The BJP and ‘others’ are projected to bag 4 seats in the state.
The ABP Ananda poll gave the BJP alliance 81 seats and Congress 33 in Assam.
On the other hand, Times Now projected that BJP would grab 57 seats and Congress 41 in the state, whereas Today’s Chanakya gave BJP an overwhelming 90 seats against 27 Congress seats.
The Congress is also expected to suffer another loss in West Bengal owing to its controversial alliance with communists. Earlier, surveys projected that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress Party would easily sweep for a second term in office.
If the exit polls are right, the Congress will get a consolation prize in Tamil Nadu.
According to the survey, only West Bengal will reelect its incumbent government led by Ms Banerjee, who is slated to defeat the Left-Congress alliance in her state.
