Telenor launches free 4G service

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Telenor has launched 4G services in Pakistan’s six major cities — Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Multan, Peshawar, and Swat.

The Norwegian telecom giant’s prepaid and post-paid users will initially be able to avail the service free of cost for a limited period of time.

However, they are required to get their SIMs replaced from the service centers and have 850 MHz compatible 4G GSM.

Telenor was awarded a $395 million worth 4G licence last month, as Pakistan sought to capitalise on a booming domestic mobile market some two years since broadband Internet arrived in the country.

In 2014, Pakistan auctioned its first 4G broadband license to China’s Zong for $210 million, along with 3G licenses to Zong, the UAE’s Ufone, and domestic Mobilink. The total raised in the auction was $1.2 billion.
