International Day of Non-Violence being observed today

LAHORE – In a bid to disseminate the message of zero violence and a desire to secure the culture of peace and tolerance in society, International Day of Non-Violence is being observed today (October 2).

The principle of non-violence rejects use of physical violence in order to achieve social or political change. Mass populations all over the world have adopted this form of social struggle in campaigns for social justice.

On 15 June 2007 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence.

The resolution by the General Assembly asked all members of the UN system to commemorate the day in “an appropriate manner and disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness.”
