PM Nawaz expresses grief over death of AHPC chief Pir Syed Ahmed Gilani

ISLAMABAD – On Sunday, Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif expressed his deep grief over the sad demise of Pir Syed Ahmed Gilani, Chairman of the High Peace Council of Afghanistan.

He also expressed condolences on behalf of the people and the Government of Pakistan, according to a press release issued by the PM Office media wing.

The Prime Minister said that the services of Pir Saheb and his tremendous efforts to bring peace in Afghanistan and promote reconciliation would always be remembered.

Gilani was the leader of Mahaz-i-Milli Islami Party, a mujahidin faction, which resisted the troops of former Soviet Union in 1980s.

He assumed charged of the Afghan High Peace Council late in the month of February last year.

The Afghan government set up the 70-member High Peace Council and launched the peace and reconciliation process in 2010 to in a bid to disarm Taliban.

He passed away at the age of 84 on Saturday due to illness in Kabul.
