ISLAMABAD – Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday directed Secretary Information Technology to block all blasphemous social media pages.
Hearing a case regarding the blasphemous content on social media, IHC Chief Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui directed authorities to dispatch the material to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and said the PM should be aware of what was happening in the country.
The honourable judge became emotional during the proceedings and hinted at summoning PM Nawaz provided no action is taken regarding the material.
‘I will summon Prime Minister in case no action takes place. I request you to take action,’ he observed.
Justice Siddiqui said that the presence of blasphemous content could spark law and order situation in the country.
The lawyers’ present in the courtroom also burst into tears when Justice Siddiqui said: ‘For God’s sake, do not do this to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him)’.
Justice Siddiqui remarked that vulgarity had overtaken electronic media in the country and honour of the nation was being sold in the name of “product”. He directed Secretary Information to look into this matter as well.
Earlier, on Wednesday, the court ordered the government to register cases against alleged blasphemers running social media pages and place their names on the Exit Control List (ECL).
