Schoolteacher set ablaze in front of students in India

BENGALURU – A 50-year-old government schoolteacher in India is battling for her life after being set on fire by her business partner over a failed business deal inside the classroom where she was delivering a lecture.

KG Sunanda was teaching Social Science to class 5 students in Shambaiahnapalya, Magadi taluk, around 55 km from Bengaluru, the capital of southern state of Karnataka on Wednesday afternoon.

As stunned students watched, the man poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze, the Times of India report.

“Around 2 pm, a man entered the classroom and shouted at the teacher, and they argued for a while. The teacher asked him to leave the room. He opened a bottle and poured liquid on her. He struck a match and set her on fire. We were helpless and screamed,” a student told the Indian daily.

While the attacker took to his heels, the frightened students ran out of the class, seeking help from teachers.

The woman was shifted to a private hospital with 50% burns. Doctors said the burns were severe and she is under observation.

Police have launched a hunt for the alleged attacker, identified as Renukaradhya.

Earlier this month, a mentally ill woman set her two minor daughters and in-laws afire before committing suicide by pouring kerosene on herself in Indian state of Gujarat.

Bhavna Parmar, 30, tried to kill four members of her family when they were sleeping at their home in Rajkot’s Bheemnagar locality. She then set herself ablaze.
