ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has expressed concern over the referendum recently held in Kurd-dominated areas of Iraq on the issue of Independence.
In a statement on Monday, Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said the referendum held on September 25 violates the Iraqi constitution and therefore lacks any legitimacy.
Pakistan is “deeply concerned over the referendum held in the Iraqi Kurdistan region on September,” the foreign office spokesperson said in response to a query regarding the matter during the weekly briefing.
“[While] the referendum violates the Iraqi constitution and therefore lacks any legitimacy, it also presents a challenge to peace and security of Iraq and the entire region,” Zakaria said.
He said Pakistan joins Iraq and its neighbors, along with the international community, in opposition to the referendum.
The spokesperson said Pakistan is deeply concerned over any attempts threatening the territorial integrity of Iraq or any other country in the region.
