20 Haqqani Network fighters killed in eastern Afghanistan

KABUL – As many as twenty insurgents of the Haqqani terrorist network were killed in an air strike in Afghanistan’s eastern Paktika province, an official said Saturday.

Detailing the nature of latest strike, Dadullah Hotak, acting provincial police chief said that the air raid targeting fighters was launched on Friday evening, where a Haqqani hideout was bombed, leaving 20 fighters, including some of their local leaders dead in Gian district of the province.

Surprisingly, the strike occurred the same day when as many as 72 Afghans were killed in two separate attacks on mosques in Kabul.

Moreover, on Saturday, 15 Afghan army trainees were killed after a suicide bomber targeted their bus as they were leaving their base in Kabul.

As a Taliban-linked group of militants, the Haqqani network mostly operating in eastern provinces and capital Kabul, has been responsible for many high-profile attacks against security forces, keeping Pakistan’s neighbour under terror.

Apparently it seems that the operation against the Haqqani network has been paced up as 26 Haqqani militants were killed in a similar incident in Jaji Maydan district of the adjacent Khost province, a few days ago.

The network, which was designated as a terrorist group by the United States in 2012, has yet to confirm or contradict the news.
