Meesha Shafi’s case will set precedents for future sexual harassment cases

The ongoing social media feud and fire between Meesha Shafi and Ali Zafar takes a legal turn as Meesha has hired lawyers to fight for her rights. On the other hand, Ali Zafar has also filed a lawsuit against Shafi for defamation. Digital rights activist Nighat Dad has stated that Meesha’s case is very strong.

Meesha and her legal team received a notice on April,25 from Ali Zafar and his legal team. Her legal counsel explained how they have a few legal requirements to fulfill before any further actions.

She explained how there are no precedents set in past or case laws especially for media personnel which they can rely on to strengthen their case, but still they have a strong enough case. Lawyers in Pakistan refer to previous judgements and verdicts in order to make new ones. Nighat remarked that the Meesha-Ali case might change the outcome of current laws.

Nighat talked about how she got a lot of support from fellow female lawyers and there are many other people who would want to come forward and testify but are scared of the general impression of courts. She encourages females to come forward as the court of sexual harassment will be headed by a woman.
