Opposition leaders protest outside ECP office against massive rigging

ISLAMABAD – The united opposition comprising major political parties staged a protest on Wednesday outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against the alleged rigging in the recently held general elections.

Leaders from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party, Muttahida Majlis e Amal (MMA) and others raised slogans against the electoral body for conducting ‘selection’ instead of elections.

Talking to newsmen, former premier Yousaf Raza Gillani claimed that the public across Pakistan had rejected the elections.

Moreover, Pakistan Muslim league Nawaz leader, Raja Zafarul Haq expressed that whole of Pakistan was protesting against the recently concluded elections.

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz President, Shehbaz Sharif did not join the demonstrators owing to ‘inclement weather’ despite the fact that his party is leading the grand opposition alliance with a strength of 64 seats in the Lower CHamber of the Parliament.

Leaders of opposition parties including Ahsan Iqbal, Pervez Rasheed, Zahid Hamid, Afrasyab Khattak, Zahid Khan, Khawaja Asif, Mushahidullah Khan, Rashid Mehmood Soomro, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Sherry Rehman, Khursheed Shah, Raja Zafarul Haq, Senator Chaudhry Tanveer, Nehal Hashmi, Mushahid Hussain, Abdul Ghafoor Hyderi, Usman Kakar, Zahid Khan, Mehmood Achakzai and Bushra Gohar are participating in the protest and as per the plan, are marching from Parliament House to ECP office.

Meanwhile, the Islamabad police have also finalised a security ahead of the protest, under which only members of the Parliament would be allowed to enter the ECP office.

Workers and defeated candidates of political parties would not be allowed to enter into the Red Zone in any case under the security plan.
