Senate by-election for two seats of Punjab on Thursday

ISLAMABAD – By-election for two seats of Senate from Punjab, including a general and a reserved seat for women, will be held on Thursday.

These seats had fallen vacant due to de-notification of Haroon Khan and Saadia Abbasi as senators in light of a Supreme Court verdict.

Senator Sadia Abbasi, sister of former PM Shahid khaqan Abbasi, and Senator Haroon Akhter were disqualified by the apex court and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) annulled their notification.

The court held that both the PML-N leaders possessed foreign nationality at the time of submission of their nomination papers for the Senate election held in March this year.

According to Election Commission of Pakistan, the polling will be held at Punjab Assembly building in Lahore from 0900 hours to 1600 hours without any break.

The ECP has appointed Provincial Election Commissioner, Punjab Zafar Iqbal Hussain as Returning Officer besides five Polling Officers to ensure free, fair and transparent polling process.
