WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran’s new president has requested a ceasefire with the United States, adding that Washington will consider it only after the Strait of Hormuz is reopened and secured.
In a statement on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said Iran’s new leadership is “less extreme and far more intelligent” than its predecessors and has reached out for a truce.
He warned that the US would continue its military actions until the key waterway is “free and safe,” using strong language to describe ongoing operations against Iran.
The remarks come amid escalating tensions following US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of senior Iranian figures and civilians. Iran responded by launching missiles and drones at US bases in the Middle East and targets in Israel, with hostilities still ongoing.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a call with European Council President Antonio Costa that Tehran is willing to halt its actions if firm guarantees are provided to prevent future attacks by the US and Israel. He emphasized that Iran has not initiated conflict but is prepared to end the war if its conditions are met.
