Nawaz Sharif not negotiating any deal with Saudi Arabia, clarifies spox

RIYADH – Former Premier Nawaz Sharif is not striking any deal during his current Saudi Arabia visit to escape accountability, his spokesperson clarified on Sunday.

According to a communique issued, the spokesperson stated the recent story published in a British publication (implying Nawaz Sharif could go into exile again) is unfounded.

“Sharif is visiting Kingdom of Saudi Arabia due to his longstanding relations with the Saudi Royal family as well as the head of the ruling party,” stated the press release.

It added that the former premier always utilized these relations for the national interest and never for his personal benefits.

“Nawaz Sharif holds all the institutions including the army and the superior courts in high esteem and has not only abide by the decisions of superior courts but also associated himself with ongoing investigations in cases politically motivated against him,” it added.

The official emphasised that despite the fact that Sharif believed he was innocent, he promptly resigned after top court verdict and is confident that he would come out clean.

“There is no ban on the movement of Nawaz Sharif and therefore, the question of seeking any permission does not arise,” the statement continued.

The statement also clarified that there were no truths to the rumours of a rift within Sharif family and expressed disappointment that the story was broadcasted in violation of established norms and ethics without taking the version of all concerned.

“Media organization are advised to approach the spokesperson before filing a story in future,” it concluded.

A story recently published by ‘The Times’ suggested that Pakistan’s former prime minister would escape a corruption trial and be allowed to live in exile under a potential deal being brokered by Saudi Arabia.

“Mr Sharif, who requires permission to leave Pakistan, is ready to quit active politics, without facing prosecution,” the exclusive story said while citing a source.
